The Man Who Owned Everything
AD 2074.

I played dice with Mammon and her children, and I won, and I have come to own, well, everything.
Yesterday I walked along the street bearing my name, surrounded by my entourage of guards, who watch everyone and each other, and I carried myself with dignity as others watched me pass with awe and respect and fear.
Still, I could not help but notice another man, old like me, pausing barefoot in the dust along the street, with a rope cinched about his knee-length kirtle. His hands were empty and I saw him look at me, holding my gaze for a moment, and then he turned away and continued along his own path.
I recognized dignity in his composure and his directness, saw this in one who owned nothing, not even the kirtle or the rope belt, those are mine, too, and now I own a bit of the shame of my glut, too, but I cannot own the dignity that is human and inalienable and that that man showed me with neither rancor nor judgment.

At first, I just looked at your jacket, hanging in the usual way on the hook on my office door, sable black I fancy now, slubbed silk for sure.

More than noticing, I was not in trouble yet.

But then I leaned into that jacket

And drew breath through it
